How to pass a prop firm challenge

A prop firm challenge is an evaluation where you trade a demo account under strict rules to earn a funded account. Most traders fail not because their strategy is bad, but because one oversized loss breaks the daily loss or maximum drawdown rule. Passing is mostly a risk-management problem.

The rules most challenges use

  • Profit target: commonly around 8–10% in phase 1 and 4–5% in phase 2.
  • Daily loss limit: often about 5% of the starting or day-start balance.
  • Maximum loss: often about 10% of the starting balance.
  • Minimum trading days, news-trading restrictions and weekend-holding rules at some firms.

These numbers are typical examples, not universal — every firm and program differs, so always read your firm's current rules.

Static vs trailing drawdown

A static drawdown is measured from your starting balance and never moves. A trailing drawdown follows your highest balance or equity upward, so profits raise your floor. Some firms measure on equity (including open trades), others on closed balance. Knowing which one applies changes how much room you really have.

A risk plan that fits the rules

  • Risk 0.5–1% per trade so a losing streak cannot hit the daily limit in one session.
  • Set a personal daily stop well before the firm's limit, for example 2–3%.
  • Aim for at least 1:2 reward to risk so a 40% win rate can still grow the account.
  • Size every trade from the stop distance with a lot-size calculator — never guess.
  • Avoid opening trades right before high-impact news if your firm restricts it.

Common reasons traders fail

  • Doubling risk to reach the target faster.
  • Revenge trading after a loss on the same day.
  • Forgetting that open floating losses count toward equity-based limits.
  • Holding through news or weekends against the rules.

Treat the challenge like a business

Trade only A-grade setups, track every trade in a journal and stop for the day when your plan says so. Time is usually on your side — many programs have no time limit — so there is no reason to force trades.
